A community of plant biologists develops guide for science outreach

Elizabeth Haswell, professor of biology, in collaboration with a network of plant biologists, co-authored a white paper published April 13 in Plant Direct. The paper titled "Broadening the impact of plant science through innovative, integrative and inclusive outreach" outlines the challenges of scientific outreach and how to improve it. The advice and resources in this paper grew out of a NAASC and NSF-sponsored workshop in the fall of 2019.

In a Q&A with Stanford News, the senior author of the paper, José R. Dinneny, spoke about the guide and the realities of what it takes to produce effective science outreach. In the article, Dinneny references Haswell's podcast The Taproot as an example of how "the general public can develop an understanding of scientists as real people" through science communication.
