Karen DeMatteo
Karen DeMatteo has a long relationship with Washington University. With the Environmental Studies program, she lectured on geographic information systems (GIS) on a part-time (2008 to 2018) and full-time (2019 to 2024) basis. With the Department of Biology, she was a research scientist (2014 to 2024) and is currently an academic advisor. DeMatteo earned her doctorate from Saint Louis University and holds adjunct appointments at the WildCare Institute - Saint Louis Zoo and multiple Argentine Institutions. She advises graduate students from a variety of disciplines that look to use GIS in their analyses. Her research is focused on the biology and ecological interactions that occur at species and community level, and her research methods include ecological genetics, GIS technology, conservation detection dogs, behavioral ecology, physiological ecology, and reproductive physiology.
