I am a neurobiologist interested in sensorimotor transformations during communication. Although non-human animals obviously interact using signals such as sounds, what kind of information is exchanged? How are signal outputs created by the brain based on signal inputs? Weakly electric fish offer a unique opportunity to address these questions because they use electric pulses to communicate their behavioral state with each other and have a neuronal circuit dedicated to analyzing these communication signals. I am currently studying how a fish’s sensory history affects its electric signal outputs using behavioral recordings from freely swimming, interacting fish and statistical modeling. In addition, I will examine sensorimotor processing in the dedicated circuit using electrophysiological recording to reveal where and how output signals are generated based on input signals from other fish.
